Hello, I hope everyone reading this is well?
I am looking for some advise in how to obtain a permanent safety role & a few tips if possible! A little about me: I have worked mostly in the Nuclear industry on various stations around the UK. My specific field is radiological protection. However, I have spent years working with conventional safety writing risk assessments, using Permits-To-Work, SSOW's etc. I would say I am missing that management high level safety experience. So basically I have been involved heavily in safety throughout the last ten years, but I have never been in a safety advisor/management role.
In regard to qualifications I have completed the Nebosh General certificate & the Diploma. I am currently enrolled in the MSc at Hull University for Occupational safety & Environmental management. So realistically, what should I be aiming for in regard to roles. What do you think I need to improve on & what I need to do to achieve a full time role in safety. I understand in the current climate this will probably be more difficult than before. Is the industry filled with opportunities or are they difficult to come by?
I would really appreciate any feedback at all if it's by replying to this forum post or sending me a direct messsage. Thank you for your time!

Hi Dixie, having spent my whole working life in construction in various roles I would suggest this industry could be a good starting point as a H&S advisor to gain valuable experience. The roles can be quite dynamic in nature with many different elements of hazard and risk control, timescales, locations, activities, etc. This working environment can be a real eye opener and may be a world apart from the industry and ways of working that you are used to. DM me if you would like to discuss offline.
Good luck, JohnMc

Look at AWE if you haven't already worked there. Sounds like you would be perfect in a Safety case role, failing that they have conventional H&S specialists also.
Good luck
