Hi All, I am after abit of clarity on the use of respiratory protection when using a Stihl saw to cut re-bar outside. Is respiratory protection a requirement as i am inclined to think it would be due to the wheel degrading when in use and the possibility of inhaling airborne contaminants from the task. Does anyone know of any documents i can refer to (apart from RA completed by contractor) as the ones i have looked at are abit woolly.
What would be the HSE stance be in this area?

yes its required APF 20 or better...not sure you will geta straight answer as most just direct you to your own assessment of the task and risk...siderosis is benign however some studies are now linking it to increased cancer risk...

Not sure how HSE would be anymore direct, as you mention the idea of welding where it is so vague. As for rebar etc. It only takes cutting a few bits of metal cutting to start getting "mucky mucus" and IMHO, that's already too late a threshold for rpe.
