Hi all, I'm wondering if somebody can 'shine some light' (see what I did there :p) on whether or not certain colour types of LED are acceptable for use in the workplace? If there are restrictions, what are they please? I ask because we have temporarily installed some green LED lights in one particular area of our factory to see if this helps operatives identify quality concerns when reviewing glass. I've looked at HSG 38 Lighting at Work and I can't find anything specific about LED but just general info. Is it a non-issue as long as the lighting rules are complied within in general (i.e. not causing glare, light is uniform across areas, it's bright enough for the perception of detail, it's overhead and not shining directly at them or causing shadows, not causing eyestrain etc)? Thanks again.

I don't see a problem with the visible colour, but I do have a larger concern over the use of LED lighting completely.

Ensure that you get the photobiological data for the lamps, this is a requirement for compliance with the product standards recognised under the low voltage directive (Electrical equipment safety regulations)

Not many lamps are actually tested correctly as required by the recognised standards, and even less can actually provide this data.

I am no expert but have observed that some LEDs flicker as they generate light.  I have also observed some LED units to flicker at a rate of 50Hz or below which if you think back to the days of CRT display screens was bad news.  I actually have a meter that measures the flicker rate (uncalibrated) to assist in my investigations of Sick Building Syndrome type complaints.
