A little variation on the Covid thread.....

21 March 2019 - if this hit the headlines I don't remember it.

Explosion involving nitrification waste, killing 78 and injuring another 76 (the latter figure is surprisingly small) at chemicals works in Yancheng City in Jiangsu Province.

According to the Xinua news agency as reported by hazardex-event.co.uk , the authorities cracked down with 53 receiving jail sentences of up to 20 years. These include the "Safety Director" and officials from six local goverment agencies found to have falsifying documents and/or taking bribes.

Chinese authorities have also stepped up their efforts to stop the illegal dumping of hazardous waste by 2025 - that sounds familiar to me in the UK.

Seems pretty nasty. The 76 were hospitalised, a further 500 were injured. Direct economic loss of over £250m. It does make me wonder if we have ticking time bombs like this in the UK.

Well you can always ask the HSE- someone did and back in 2018 got this https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/comah_sites_list_lower_and_upper

. Don’t know how many are “ticking time bombs”  but is suspect that we would find out.

In this country is this issue is not conspiracies and secrecy but basically public indifference and apathy. Of course that could be the result of  a conspiracy by the media!

Interesting that there is a difference between the print and online versions of the article that I referred to which put the direct economic cost at £22.6m in the print version. 500 injured sounds more likely than 76 and I guess the 76 "hospitalised" were those who were kept in as inpatients.

As to ticking time bombs, well all the sites which are registered in GB in COMAH are open to see on the HSE website.

Doing a search for sites within 3 miles of my postcode, there is only 1 listed - there would be many more if the search permitted me to expand my search to say within 30 miles.

Pagination below went a bit askew due to the column format of my cut and paste from the HSE website......

Not sure how much more Diageo would tell me!

Lower tier site due to volume of overproof alcohol stored. There are quite a few top tier COMAH sites in Scotland amongst bonded warehouses.
