There are proposals for the Membership Grades to change but at this particular time, IOSH says on its website:

"You’ll join IOSH as an Affiliate Member at £191 (£133 membership fees + £58 joining fee). We will support you to transfer to a Technical Member if you meet the criteria. On renewal, if you have transferred, your membership fee will remain at £133."

In terms of the academic qualfication required to progress from Affiliate to Technical Member, it is set at Level 3 - NEBOSH is one of several options. I have a cousin who who has got two @ Level 3 qualifications en route towards his Level 6 NCRQ Diploma.

No you don't need to go down the IOSH route. IOSH. like many commercial organisations in this sector provide training courses in h&s.

IOSH just happen to have cornered the market and have become the most recognisable name in safety qualifications. Whether IOSH provide the best training is open to much debate. Its a while since I did some IOSH training (well over 15yrs) but they are/used to be very prescriptive training systems/courses.

If you can fit it in, you could do a degree in h&s - various universities do distance learning courses.

For me - I did the NEBOSH Gen Cert back in the early 1990s, then (as was) the Part 1 Diploma by about 1997. I was CMIOSH at one stage.

I then moved into engineering design in the oil & gas sector - doing safety engineering /process /design safety engineering. IOSH/NEBOSH qualifications were/are NEVER asked for in this type of role.

For such roles some form of science/engineering degree is much more important thn NEBOSH qualifications.

I haen't been a paid member of IOSH for now, maybe 10-15yrs. Have I lost work over it? No

You might lke to go down the route of being an occupational hygienist - in which case the British Institute of Occupational Hygiene provide a whole series of different training courses.

If you are in the process industries - the Institute of CHemical Engineers provide training/recognition as a Professional Process Safety Engineer.

So please don't think you have to be an NEBOSH/IOSH drone - there is more to h&s than this.

I have joined and received a email from IOSH which i found confusing. Maybe its me?

What i want to do is show my qualifications, certificates and cv to see if i can have my membership upgraded..

We are now preparing your IOSH Affiliate membership card and leaflet which will be posted to you. UK delivery will take 3 – 4 weeks and overseas it can take 6 – 8 weeks to arrive.

How to transfer your category of membership:

CPD (Continuing Professional Development) - 24 hours after joining you will gain access and need to set up a development plan under your CPD, (Continuing Professional Development) programme. 1. Attached is a CPD guidance, which explains how to register to my IOSH if you have not already done so, and how to set up the development plan. The CPD guidance document will give you step by step procedures. The development plan set up brochure document will give you a good example of what a development should include. Please refer to page 3.

2. You will then need to email professional.development@iosh.com with scanned copies of any Health & Safety qualifications that you currently hold. If you are submitting an NVQ then please include your module/unit pages and the name of the Training Provider. A full list of the qualifications currently accredited for Technical and Graduate membership can be found on our website at http://www.iosh.co.uk/Membership/About-membership/Qualifications.aspx. We will also require a copy of your CV. This should be up to date and highlight your working experience in health and safety. We are looking for 2 years full time or 3 – 5 years part time health and safety working experience. Please detail what you practice, preach and delivery in health and safety.

Please do not email your certificate and cv until you have set up your development plan

We will then be able to assess whether or not we can put you forward for Associate, Technical or Graduate membership. If you meet the criteria you will be notified by email of the recommendation and the date when your transfer will go to audit.
