Some moderation and perhaps also some censorship too perhaps?

An open question seeking views relating to our first specialist group not directly assigned to an industry grouping by common/similar risk profile appears to have been removed from the member only forums.

An irony being of course that members of that group may well, through the course of their previous emplyment, have risked life and limb in many situations for the right of freedom of expression of others.

So, is the project continuing?

Something that I don't think has been mentioned up to now about the value of these forums is the private messaging facility.  I've found this very useful after posting a career question after which a forum member got in touch to offer more personal advice than can be given on an open forum.  There's quite often a comment on a thread to the effect "I've sent you a PM" which indicates that others are using it too to go into information that may be beyond the forum's remit.  So I am guessing that others have also found this helpful?

1.      Do you find the forums welcoming?

Yes, friendly and knowledgable people with the same faces always helping (I wont embarass people by naming names), some can be a bit short or critical, but the majority are great and in taking everyones advice with a pinch of salt to account for personal differences in perspective and understanding you can clearly see whose comments are worth listening to.

2.      Have you found the information accurate and helpful?

Accuracy can be a spectrum, but the regulars usually reference the relevant legislation/guidance/ACOP etc. and know their information inside and out. Usually helpful and supportive, even when critical it's usually constructive and helpful.

3.      Do you like the anonymity of the forum against the visibility of other communication channels?

Yes, I've worked for clients who are aware of the forum and have been able to ask things I'm unsure of with confidence that it's not going to come back and bite me.

Additionally; I let my IOSH membership slip, I did not find membership to be good value, nor did I find it bring any advancement to my professionalism or work. I was only occassionally using the forums to troubleshoot issues I didn't know or couldn't easily find answers to. The forum is an invaluable resource for annoymously discussing our complex field with other, often more knowledgable, peers. Whilst I don't feel that IOSH is particularly good or helpful organisation the forum is a precious resource.

A few days ago, a message was posted on the Members' Forums asking for guidance on training for Biological Safety Officers.

Completely outside my comfort zone (and I don't think that applying imposter syndrome is a good idea) but I knew exactly which user of the Forums would be able to answer the question and they didn't disappoint.

Just like when people ask QQ about the arcane issues of type testing. Long since I needed to often worry about CE marking and the like but the QQ are asked by people who need to know and there are Forum users who have the answers at their finger tips.

Forums are the jewel in IOSH's crown.

Would it hurt IOSH to promote the use of this site more. An IOSH magazine a little while ago following their survey claimed that a rather large number of people thought that the main reason for being in IOSH was that it helped them maintain their CPD. I did find that a little hard to believe (would have thought it was for job hunting reasons IMHO), however the discussion forum could be very useful in discussing H&S issues for CPD.

Chris - agreed that the Forums could help people (of whatever discipline) with their CPD.

However, this is dependent on those people also recognising that CPD is NOT just about going on courses, attending meetings and reading magazines.

But rather doing what it takes to find learning appropriate to one's OWN job and sometime what each individual aspires to.

So, as example if I wanted to cross over into specialising in fire risk assessments, I could go on courses, which are MARKETED as being CPD, but of equal value would be reading Grenfell reports and draft legislation AND perhaps picking the brains of others on these Forums (either by asking QQ and evaluating the responses or simply keeping an eye on what is said on threads started by others)

What matters is how much the individual learns not some pre-determined number of hours..

I agree.  I've recorded a number of forum discussions in my CPD where I have learned something from my peers.

This forum is excellent, I have certain competencies and contribute when I belive I can help.

As for subjects I have no competency for I read with interest and learn from my peers.

I also enjoy the banter, some real comedians on here.
