Hello all, My employer owns a shiney new warehouse, and we been asked by a potential customer to store raw peanuts in hessian sacks, before finally loading into trailers. We store other goods including bagged coffee beans and granules. Obviously there is a known allergen risk with peanuts, however, what i need to know is, are there any rules / legislation regarding the storage of peanuts in warehouses, if there's any requiremnent for ventilation / LEV systems for dusts, any segregation requirements from other products etc. Would anyone out in the H&S world be able to point me in the right direction please? Thanks in advance :)

Can't peanuts self ignite under the right circumstances? I am sure it was a fascinating fact I learnt somewhere, probably QI, or QI debunked it....

Consider someone with a type I sensitisation/allergy to peanuts exposed to the dust! Even at very low levels this could result in an allergic reaction and, possibly an aphylaxis. Dust on the lips could be sufficient.

In some production facilities and warehouses they segregate it into different areas depending on the activity so that the risk controls are appropriate ...not only are you looking at alergens and ecoli etc you will be looking at fire and explosion hazards...when you segragate by area you can then see what areas are dusts etc and control appropriately..which will then include air flow, LEv whare appropriate etc..
