Hello Everyone,

I have to carry out the Noise Risk Assessment. Could you advise me if I need use both Personal Noise Dosimeter and Sound Level Meter or would be sufficient to use only Sound Level Meter?

I would start off with a sound level meter and do a sort of "go - no go" test and then if any areas are around any of the limits and are frequented by personnel / or personnel work in those areas permanently I would do the personal monitoring.

Regulations state that noise risk assessment is required if there is the likelihood of exposure to noise.  You could do a baseline study through a phone (apps can be obtained freely from the App Store or Google Play), clearly these aren't calibrated but offer indicative levels.

Would ideally get a site plan for the above and grid the layout in to 5m or 10m squared elements (size dependent), then take the noise levels accordingly.  These will differ, but you are getting a dB(A) reading.  If levels are above the action level of 80dB(A) then I personally would use dosimeters to ascertain post holder exposure, then determine actions moving forward.

Finally, on your readings, look at determining zonage etc. when you have exhausted all potential improvements to reduce noise levels, providing the PPE, training on the use and correct wearing of said PPE etc.

That is the most cost effective way, instead of purchasing initial noise level meter.

I would concur with what has been stated.  I often use the app on my phone (free download form the app store on Iphone) to get a baseline reading and then take further steps if the reading suggests that there is or may be a risk in that area.

Bigmac1 is correct you have to be a noise assessor to carry out correct monitoring and assessments for work all you can do is get a rough idea with these apps they are no good for excate figures

Do the walk through and identify the key noisy areas then get somone in to do the full survey and sampling...from that you can complete the full risk assessment..
