violence and threats of theft to welfare unit and site.

Hi, I have been advised of threats to cause damage to hired welfare unit and theft of property on a shopfitting site. The hired welfare unit has been collected by the hire company and temp. welfare introduced inside the premises, 4 chairs, microwave, toaster and portaloo outside. As H&S consultant to the principal contractor I have amended the CPP and sent to the PD via their CDM chap. The Client's H&S Auditor has been and seen the set up and approved it, we don't usually get visits from HSE unless there is an accident on site, so should be ok for the remaining few weeks of the project. OK, so now you know, I wonder what else can be done, it is Travellors causing the problem.

The threat of theft is very unusual. What do you mean by that…did someone turn up one the site and say that they will steal everything or what?

FireSafety - this has been a problem for construction sites for decades. What you could consider is accelerating the completion of whatever permanent welfare facilities would be in the shop(s) and using those. You will likely get the old argument about potentially damaging whatever is to be handed over, but it can be done. P

yes, there was a confrontation, the travellers were all over the external areas and hovering close to the entrance.

P Peter, the site manager used his initiative and set up the temporary facilities very quickly. As I say the safety auditor approved the facilities during his audit.

firesafety - no quibbles with the site manager being proactive, but you did ask what else could be done! P
