Hi all. Just need a bit of a nudge here in the right direction.

Operators of a high lever order picker moves forward from one picking bay to another whilst raised to save time. Is this permissible? I'm asssuming not. although I note that these types of trucks do go to Creep mode when raised. What guidance should I be looking at/quoting?

Is this common practice and has anyone else had this, and what was the solutions?

Thanks of anyone can help

Have you looked at:

1) The manufacturer operating instructions for the order picker

2) The provided operator training

Lots of equipment is designed with the concept of the operator being moved at high level rather than lower / re-position / raise. Taking your assumption to the nth degree there would only be a raising/lowering action which sort of defeats the whole designed purpose of a picker.

As Round T says only if designed - the ones i have seen in use have sped limitors so go much slower if elevated. But make sure you have a robust SSW. As an inspector once investigated an incident where one such truck hit another and knocked it over. Fortunatly it was carrying roles of material wich cusioned the operatives fall (both trucks in elevated position). Have seen some with "magic eyes" thats cuts power if they get close. Other solutions include one isle one truck or - as the company i invstigated did after the accident - painted lines on the floor with drivers keeping 2 apart.

Agree with both of the above, it is only if designed to do so and normally that would only be wire guided equipment that can travel with the driver at height.

If the equipment is suitably specified for the location and is CE marked then travelling at height should never be an issue.

IF the operator has limited visibility at height then the equipment must have detection.

If the equipment can travel at height then it must be safe to do so.

As long as you did your due diligence under PUWER Reg 10 then you have nothing to worry about and they are safe to drive at height.

I agree with Roundtuit if an operator is operating a high-level order picker and a workplace incident were to occur then the question would be asked what training has been provided and was that training provided by a competent trainer?

The organisation should always refer to the manufacturers operating instructions for the high-level order picker and the infomation to create a safe working operating procedure.

You need to think that most large warehouses have a large mix of traffic moving through the airles at any give time. Including pedestrians, other fork lift trucks and manual-operated pump trucks.

This is why its citical for anyone who is operating a high-level order picker to be well vigilant when operating the truck and fully understands your safe traffic route policy and procedures.

This policy should take into account speed limits, right of way to other and non-pedestrian areas etc.

Often as stated previously the high level order picker will travel at a reduced speed.  Also will only travel in a traight line to go from one pick location to the next adajacent with out the the need to lower, position and raise.

However as also previously stated the Training for the particular rateing of equipment and the manuafacturer will give further guidance.
