Hello all,

Does IOSH have a register of Safety Practitioners for the Arabia and Africa areas?

Thanks in advance for any information you can offer.

Hi Scottie

I think the accurate answer to your question is "not really".

IOSH relatively recently took over administration of the Occupational Safety and Health Consultants' Register, OSHCR, which was supposed to point those needing a consultant to people who had passed a few basic criteria for competence, including e.g. insurances.

OSHCR seemed to be floundering almost from the outset (NOT under IOSH administration at the time, but I don't know what if any changes IOSH has made since taking over administration).

After I think 3 years on OSHCR and just a single marginally useful lead I came to the conclusion that it was not worth spending more of my employer's money.

On the IOSH website are also Members' profiles, on the "Membership Directory" but that depends on Members actually completing their profiles and keeping them up to date.

Can't remember when I last looked at mine. Definitely would not consider it a marketing tool in my job - but it might be a better means of marketing for a sole trader or small business.

Both OSHCR and the Membership Directory will give you an idea of where Members wish to promote their services if they work as consultants. But just because someone says that they offer a worldwide service, doesn't mean that they have much experience in the Middle East, Africa or anywhere else!

To get a better understanding of their real geographic reach you would need to start with their CVs and then quiz them. So, as example, my CV does not mention Africa but does say "Qatar" but doesn't say just two weeks in total in the Middle East.

You might be better posting your question on other social media platforms that have less restrictions on advertising than these Forums - see Rule 8.

Good luck, Peter
