WAH Rescue Kit for Ladders with cages fitted

Good day, Just curious to hear opinions of a rescue from a ladder with a cage fitted. We will have an inertia reel fitted but if the person becomes stuck inside the caged area of the ladder and unable to self rescue. There is not enough room to climb past the IP inside the cage for traditional MILAN rescue kit. What would be the best method for rescue in this situation? Thanks in advance for your time.

OK so 70 views and no response, ( hope this is not just a crafty advert - if it is it worked as i had to look up the Milan systen) not an area I work in that often but for me there are a couple of questions that might help people offer help. As I understand the Milan system its designed to allow the IP to be lifted, to relieve the pressure to release the fall arrest system, it then acts as a an inertia reel to lower both IP and rescuer to ground. It sounds as if you are already climbing with an inertia real system fixed – so what situation are you considering? Is it that your colleague falls and nocks himself out they could become wedged in the ladder in some way? If a rescuer could “un wedge” them would the inertia reel system then work? (Obviously would need to talk to the manufacture) I can see one possible scenario that would be problematic, where a leg mag get stuck through the ladder leaving the IP hung head down. This would be difficult to release from below – is that your potential problem.

Hi Brian, thanks for the only response 🙂
No not advertising for MILAN and yes was thinking what to do if an unconscious IP were to trap his leg inside the cage
But like you point out, the person will be connected to an inertia reel so the rescue I guess would be just to get the IPs leg free.

Hello,
Without seeing any pictures it's really difficult to comment. Is it completely impossible for the potential rescuer to get past any casualty? What about the rescuer maintaining their own fall arrest whilst climbing through the cage or opposite side of the ladder? Again, hard to tell without seeing. There's rope access techniques that can be utilised, (Petzl ID at ground level, run through a pulley overhead etc), but that's getting quite complex for a simple ladder with cage.

We have several retrievable inertia reels where the crank allows the IP to be raised back to the platform or landing area; some of the reels only allow the IP to be lowered 2m or so (you would need to check with the manufacturer). Just though I would comment as there are several companies i have audited which have not been aware of this, best to make sure.

This only works if there's someone above to operate it.
How does that person get up there without a rescue plan? Chicken and egg scenario. Those devices are best suited for confined space works.
