I have a contractor that is have having new machines delivered and has suggested they put a plasma cutting machine underneath a mezzanine floor, opinions ?

Resricted ventilation space and not the only machine they are wanting to place under mezz floor.

I assume you mean the handheld (or robot handheld) torch attached to a machine the size of a welding set opposed to the one that cuts metal which is submerged in coolant ( we used to have one the size of a small swimming pool) . You will have the same sort of fume as you get from welding and so similar LEV and possibly masks for everyone in the area (and above?) are required. If it is the coolant type again issues with fume from the heated coolant and contamination of the coolant (there used to be HSE guidance on coolant). There will be UV hazards, noise hazards in addition from the process. Then there will be fire safety problems. Both from potential hot particles smouldering under another machine etc and the need for increased fire detection. Do you think there may be a build up of heat in the general work area? Fume will be different depending on what they intend to cut. Chris

Cathy, mezzanines come in all sorts of shapes and sizes and without much more information about the scenario difficult to comment. The plasma cutter could cut through the steelwork supporting the mezzanine, but for all we know the mezzaine could be constructed using other materials. The plasma cutter might emit fumes that might spread upwards into the mezzanine area, but perhaps not if it is fully enclosed, and even less likely if local exhaust ventilation is provided.
