Hi everyone,

My company currently carries out site safety audits on the construction sites they operate on, however these are not currently measured. Can anyone reccomend a template i can use to create an audit that is scored so i can measure the performance month by month.

Hi Darren - you asked exactly the same question on 5 May 2021.

My answer would be exactly the same and you received other good advice at the time.

+ you need to have an understanding as to what you want to gain from a scoring system.

VERY easy to end up with a scoring system which completely skews reality on the ground, and sometimes that may be what the powers that be want to see - something that gives a sense of comfort that may well not be warranted.

As example, if you have ten cranes on a site do you score each one, or treat them as a group.

Similarly, would you have one line for "occupational health risks" or lots of lines for individual types of risk.

So, if say you score each element on a scale of 1-10 and your control is above average say 7 for each crane (if 10 is excellent), you can end up with craneage adding either 7 or 70 to the overall audit score. One would look relatively minor in terms of priorities the other might be a red flag.

KISS. Keep it simple stupid ha ha.  I did site safety inspections for a few years before my "employer" required them to be scored to introduce competition between principal contractors.

I devised a system where I scored one point or no points depending on what I was looking at.  I had a list of more than a hundred items to look at and I totalled up the score at the end.

I only scored against something that was in operation, e.g.  work at height, hot work, ladders in use.  if something was not in action nothing to score.

All exceptions were recorded and reported to the PC concerned while on site and in writing.

Once I had a total I counted up the number of items scored and calculated the percentage using a formulae I found on google.

All sounds very complicated but once in action was very simple and every PC bought into it and strived for the highest score, knowing that low scores may lead to no contracts.

My inspections took between one and two hours and because there was clarity, I took the time to explain what I was doing, everyone was agreeable.

Not rocket science but I suppose the down side was it all done using pen and paper then put on the PC later.
