We recently had an audit where it was flagged that we have two milling machines that need guards fitting. I admit I should have picked up on it, but I'm relatively new to the role and H&S in general. Does anybody have any recommendations on where I could get some guards that don't cost £700+ each? Thanks

Hi Mike What sort of milling machines - vertical or horizontal, CNC or not? Long time since I have had to consider a provider but Proctor used to be good at most machinery guarding issues. If these are old machines that were built to last, then perhaps you might have the skills in house to make your own guards to traditional standards. If these are new(ish) fangled CNC machines which need interlocked guards, then perhaps something in the hundreds of ££ is not far off the mark, particularly if you want the right paperwork. P

Thanks Peter, they're both vertical non-CNC machines, they're relatively old (though not like the pre-WW2 lathe we have), maybe turn of the millenium-ish.
I did find one for about £40 that clips to the machine with a magnet and has a decent sized screen on an arm, that seems like it would be a simple enough solution, but I'm also thinking it could be a "you get what you pay for" type situation.

Remember, guards supplied onto the market independently must be CE/UKCA marked in their own right.
This also applies to guards made in house.
