Good morning

I work as a H&S Manager for a large woodworking manufacturing business, and one of my supervisors drew my attention to the skip changing operation for when the wood dust extraction skip needs changing when it's full.

After a review of this work activity, a miriad of issues were identified i.e. falling from height, incorrect use of equipment / forklift and exposure to high levels of MDF dust.

I would like some advice on mainly what equipment is out there which could be attached to a forklift for correct movement of a skip. You'll see by the photo that the skip is on a wheeled trolly. The forks will sit underneath the trolly and then be lifted and manoeuvred out of the bay, but this requires around 3-4 staff members to crowd around the skip to help manoeuvre it in the right direction. The link below will take you to a photo.

Any advice on this would be great.

Thank you

Hi Scott

By the looks of it that skip is far too big to be safely handled by a forklift especially when others are needed  around it to help guide it, so you are right to be concerned.

I work in a sawmill and we use smaller skips designed for FLTs that would be safer but they either fill up too fast or cause bridging in the cyclone. The other  method we have is an articulated trailer that the saw dust is blown into. These are then swapped over when full by the supplier. Not sure where you are but we use a company called Anderson Sawdust and Shavings based in West Lothian. Either of these would require altering the pipework and possibly more equipment to be added but both would be safer.

Regards, Dave

How often does the skip get changed, does a waste collector come & swap the skip over ,or do you take the waste somewhere?  A smaller forklift tipping skip could be suitable, does it have a closed lid due to the dust?
