Morning All, A bit of an obscure one, but I dont suppose anyone has any knowledge on safety vessel requirements, or can point me in the right direction. We have been asked to provide rescue cover for our engineers working on a boat, the work will be conducted on a river, we have a safety vessel available but I am unsure of the requirement of the crew. Any help would be magnificent.

A lot depends on the activities being undertaken and the type of river (is it tydal - whats the current like etc.) Many years ago as a professional SCUBA instructor i held the RYA Safety Boat Certificate (AS well as small power boat hadling). Which covers rescuing people from water etc - but its very much aimed at sports people (dingly sailors, windserfers etc) not people who will be wearing bulky work equipment. Still might be a good place to start.

There is an RYA Safety Boat qualification, but this is more geared towards 'club' type sailing and water events,
The module includes boat handling, obviously, First Aid and Rescue.
Perhaps you/your client could consider this as a minimum, on the old, 'Risk Based Approach'
However, on offshore/inshore works I have been involved with over many years, both ours, and the clients requirements were for an RYA Powerboat certificate, With a 'Commercial Endorsement', (Which takes some months/years to qualify for).
You may also be lucky to find soneone who has worked in the Merchant Navy or offshore who has a STCW95 Fast Rescue Craft Coxn
Or, if you're not too far away from them, talk to the nearest/local RNLI or Coastguard who may be able to help either on a commercial basis or on a 'donation'
You may find it more cost effective to Hire In a Safety boat and crew, there are many company's around the country who do this.
A quick google comes up with companys and prices starting from £199/day

best always contracting it out to a specialist as experience in this goes a long way to actually saving lives... Not affiliation, I have seen them on training ex before and they at least look like they know what they are doing... https://safetyboatservices.co.uk/
