Hello all,

My question is really aimed at organisations who are in the esoteric area of chemicals and chemical experimentation - we currently run an old, and now unsupported, risk assessment database running on Microsoft Access. Howeve the very clever person who built the system retired about 2 years ago and we have no-one with the skills tobe able to support it and amend it as and when required.

Therefore we are looking for a specialist software that will allow us to undertake our CoSHH assessments - about 200 of them - which covers not only routine cleaning chemicals and sthe sort of stuff that would be in use in many organisations. However our use of chemicals is much more specialised and we have a team of scientists undertaking a variety of experiments and tests with some extremely hazardous materials - in simple terms we are doing university-level research experiments.

So - does anyone have knowledge of any software that we can look at to see whether it fits our needs?

TIA

Hi

I recently had a demo by Sevron, it seemed to do everything we wanted including they have a bespoke DATA sheet system , i haven't used it yet, prices for us were coming out at about 6k.  I have heard alot of feedback that many of these systems are not great but i was willing to give this one a go

COSHH Risk Assessment Software | Sevron

I think it is very unlikely that you will find an off she shelf software package that will do what you are looking for.

YOUR scientists know what experiments they are doing and can predict what sort of intermediates and final chemical mixes may be anticipatable.

YOU probably also some younger staff who can do Access or Excel programmes almost with their eyes shut. Encourage them to use their talents, get the scientists to explain what they need and cut out the expensive external provider (who DOESN'T know about advanced chemistry)!!

I have got an A Level in Chemistry - NOT advanced! We played mostly with inorganic reactions. Your scientists are probably doing MUCH more complicated stuff and as it's experimental with some outcomes that are very difficult to accurately predict.

As  Peter has said you won’t get anything off the shelf for chemical research labs. What you need is document control software. People will then produce there own risk assessment. I assuming that at least some of them will be synthesising their own compounds. The software will record the original version of the risk assessment, then remind people to review the document which will be the master copy and upload any modifications but keep the originals in an archive.

thanks 1 user thanked A Kurdziel for this useful post.

We use a system called Sypol by Alcumus, but thats as far as I get involved with it.

I built a nice system in Access - it was never adopted, but it shows the poster above is correct.  Access would provide a solution.  The trouble these days is that databases are on the way out with the introduction of things like Sharepoint, The trouble is that Sharepoint wants everything tabulated and it is very difficult that make it function as the relational database that is need for things like COSHH assessment.  However, if you built something on the basis of manual documents (Word or Excel maybe) then Sharepoint seems to lend itself to document management as you update and change the initial assessments.  I've recently been looking for a solution myself, but so far have no spotted an ideal off the shelf system.
