Hi all,
I have had my yearly board presentation and the MD has asked where we sit in relation to other companies accident frequency rates etc.
Our accidents are calculated per 1 million hours worked and per 1000 employees
Where can I find similar information out for a pet food manufacturing company so as I can look to benchmark and more to the point of being able to understand the data.
I would be grateful for help from those who know

Hi SPR Variants of your question have been asked and answered on numerous occasions on these Forums so I am not going to repeat what has been said other to provide a summary response. It is nigh on impossible to benchmark against comparable organisations unless you do this in collaboration with such organisations so that you know that you are comparing apples with apples. Different methods of counting. Different sizes of organisations, different processes (Cardboard packaging v cans etc etc), different supply chain arrangements etc etc. As example, do your stats count the accidents to those doing transport of goods into your processing facilities and of finished goods? Probably one of the areas where the risks are highest. So, if you employ your own logistics people you SHOULD probably have higher accident rates than a comparable pet food manufacturer who outsources all such operations.

Ok, if the HSE stats for 2020/2021 are showing:
Total reported non fatal injury for my company SIC code as 450, how do you find the average?

SPR - in simple terms you can't easily find an average from HSE statistics. Yes you can look for the overall stats for an SIC code but they don't tell you about levels of underreporting let alone how these might be skewed within any SIC code. As yet HSE has not published any research to my knowledge on underreporting/underrecording of accidents since RIDDOR 2013 came into force. But they did publish data for underreporting under previous iterations of RIDDOR. So, over 50% of accidents reportable by employers. Ergo, if your accident rate is half that of the little guys at the bottom you are probably about as good/bad as the small folk! Is that really a comparison that your Board wants to hear? The easiest single way of getting that graph showing trends in accident rates on a downward slope has been to outsource as much as possible to the developing world - that has been the case since the end of World War II. Wouldn't look good on your Sustainability Report if you implemented such an outsourcing policy. Whilst realising that Boards love to play numbers games why not influence them to be more interested in proactive indicators of HS&E performance?
