Welfare Regs v Sustainability - Drinking vessels, your views.

Can I get your views please? The welfare regulations clearly state Where a supply of drinking water is required by paragraph (1), there shall also be provided a sufficient number of suitable cups or other drinking vessels unless the supply of drinking water is in a jet from which persons can drink easily. Our FMS Department have stated they will not provide cups, only for visitors due to sustainability policies. This means we have multiple water points with no access to water unless you have/ carry a bottle or cup. Some reusable cups were provided a few year ago to staff but none since.
My own view is that cups should be provided or water fountains fitted. Has anyone been in such a position because I am being ignored? I need to benchmarck from your responses. Thanks

I think its one of those situations where it may be in the regs, but most safety people including inspectors would go "realy? is that all you have to worry about?" in my experiance most people want to use thier own mug anyway.

Sustainability policies might prohibit the use of disposable cups, but I don't see why they would prohibit the use of washable, reusable ones.

Hi Mr anom The Regs don't say where the cups (or similar) are to be provided. So, if you "provide" (the verb used in the Regulation) a member of staff with a suitable, reusable cup and expect them to carry it from A to B and back, what's the problem?

We got rid of plastic cups for our free coffee / tea machines and offered our staff mugs or larger tumblers with lids. It was an effortless transition and everyone was happy as they effectively had larger recepticle for their drinking endeavours.

Just make sure, as premises controller, there is similar provision made for visitors especially delivery drivers. Has just struck me though as to how unhygeinic school was given the drinking fountains were situated in the toilet blocks where there were no closing lids and huge old cisterns.
