Help please. Can anybody direct me to indicative loads inflicted during the insertion and extraction of a hand auger used to obtain a soil sample or provide advice on how to calculate these loads?

Regards

Robin

Hi Robin

All the soil sampling by auger that I have ever had dealings with has involved mechanical plant (with various risks including manual handling), but may be you are looking at small diameter, shallow holes.

Possibly you might find something at the British Drilling Association website. Otherwise one for a geotechnical engineer (or similar) who could tell you what weight of material is removed - from which estimates of the forces needed to extract could be calculated.
