Hi This topic may have been discussed before, if it has then please accept my apologies. I am looking for information regarding the inspection of fixed ladders. Moreover, we have a number of fixed ladders on-site that were installed many years ago (i assume to the relevant standards active at that time). In terms of a competent person inspecting these on a regular basis - we lack that level of competency within the business. We have contacted numerous companies that provided the inspection service, but all of them state that they will inspect to current standards. Is there any advice/guidance/legislation on the inspection criterion to be applied to existing (legacy) fixed ladders? I have carried out loads of research, to no avail. I have contacted our insurers to see if they have an SME in this area and await their feedback. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Everything gets tested and inspected to the current standard no matter how old it is. However in some standards there is leeway for legacy equipment to remain in service if it meet a previous standard and is in a good state of repair. Also some legacy equipment requires a risk assessment to state to be completed so it can remain in service. Your older ladders probably fail the current standard in regard to landing areas/rest platforms if over 9m in height and you will most likely have a vertical single run all the way to the top. Structurally they will most likely be ok, but due to the lack of landing platforms and a suitably sized caged system (Hooped Ladders), will require some sort of fall arrest system to be added to allow them to be kept in service.
