Good morning all,
Can anyone help - should primary occupiers of buildings pay for first aid training of on site contractors? For example, my organisation is the primary occupier of a large building that has 450 staff and three types of on site contractors: maintenance, cleaning and catering. Each of these three contractors are separate companies. We have been asked if we can put the catering contractors on an upcoming 3 day first aid course but I am wondering whether their own company should pay for this, or whether as primary occupier we have a duty to put them on this training. Is there specific guidance on this, or would it be an avenue explored via our first aid needs assessment?

It depoends on what the contract states. Depending on how involved the contract is will determine the level of training and who pays for it.

Well look at it this way. Each employer has a responsibility to ensure first aid provision is available to their own workers - but not (as a legal requirement that is) to anyone else. So is the primary purpose of training these contractors so that they can give first aid to your workers, or so that they can give first aid to each other?

It wouldn't be out of order for you to put them on the course,
But as they're contractors and can be moved off your site at any time, and as the certificate is 'mobile' and they can take it anywhere with them, get your commercial/finance guys to agree it and back-charge the course fees to the contractor ??
