To set the picture - We have a school just around the corner of our site, we're a metal profiler - lots of heavy parts and lots of coming and going HGV's - the acess road is a small road with our electric gates around half way. Pick up and drop off parents are blocking the road and leading to HGV's struggling to gain access or being unable to, Wagon in picture had to reverse back around the corner and drive off, Parents and kids are walking infront of the HGV's and overall this is blocking all the surrounding roads. We've rang the school with our concerns and made zero progress - our next step is a no parking sign but i'm not completley sure who the land belongs to. What should be our next step after the sign?

If it ‘s a public highway, then you have no right to put up any signs. Have you talked to the local council about this? They might be able to put in signage or yellow line( or zig zags near the school) What exactly do you want to happen? They can’t move the school any more than you can move your business. How do you see yourselves sharing this area with the parents who will want to drop off and pick up kids? PS we did not get any pictures from you.

Thanks for the reply, understand the school can’t move and as a parent myself I understand how a school run can be a complete nightmare but this has gotten out of hand and I’m worried a child is going to end up under a Wagon. I’m not sure this space is big enough to be shared in a way that is safe for them, we already try to schedule deliveries at different times but it doesn’t have much impact with drivers running early / late. I’m also worried about the emergency services aspect as its completely blocking our site. This is my first post but it won’t let me attach or paste the CCTV still.

Your real recourse is to identify the land owner as they can clamp vehicles (with suitable warning sign) which will get around and deter offenders. Talking to the school / council / having yellow lines or zig-zags painted has no effect on school run parents - plenty of examples throughout the press so much so councils are now adopting a principal of school streets which push traffic on to adjacent roads. If you happen to be at the end of a street with a school you could make this a suggestion to the council who would then block parents at dropping off times but must permit access of delivery vehicles. This will save your company employees having confrontation with parents.

I thought due to the amount of cowboys clamping anyone years ago the DVLA cracked down and now they're basically the only people that clamp? I've taken your advice and emailed over to the parking deparment of the council, i'll see where i get.

Still see a lot of the warning signs attached to buildings (like most signage put up and promptly forgotten). Whilst they can no longer clamp the land owner can issue charges for parking on private land.
Drivers finding a street full of ticketed vehicles will soon get the message.

Hi Jonny Who are your neighbours and what do they think? My guess is that the road is "adopted" and so a public road and as AK says you cannot legally start chucking down No Parking cones and even if you did, they are of no legal value. However, lots of Councils are saying that they are in favour of "active travel" to school and some Councils are implementing policies that force drop off and pick up points well away from the school gates (with the ultimate objective of reducing the number of those who do the "school run" or at least making it a shorter school run. Now even before considering the road safety issues, if these drivers parking in the street outside your premises and those of the neighbours cause nuisance, then perhaps a collective neighbourhood approach via local Councillors would have greater impact than just your business contacting the Council (however business friendly your Council says it is!)......but if you can also present this as a road safety issue, then perhaps the Council will have a Road Safety Audit done. + it's still wintry out there and it's quite probable that there are some parents (or similar) are sitting parked with the engines running. That's an offence in most Council areas so if you can show evidence that this is happening, the air quality "police" may also want to know. Lots of streets in the UK with parking restrictions but with exceptions for business deliveries.

Hi Peter, Thanks for the advice, I’d probably agree the road being adopted although I am looking further into this. Our neighbour is another manufacturing business, both of us working in the steel industry. They are on board so far as the signage was originally their idea. Agreed, I’ve emailed the council but I don’t expect too much back at this point. I think the more personal approach of a councillor may help. I think the road safety issue here is massive so fingers crossed on that. Didn’t even consider the air quality aspect, I’ll have to do some digging on Kirklees’ policies. Thanks.

I'm sorry my attempt at being polite in my first post and agreeing with genuine advice has upset you so much you felt the need to accuse me, as to my poor attempt to attach a picture - that’s on me. Here’s an update if you're interested in my mischief, I did in fact contact all the local Cllr’s for this area and they brought in the head of highways direction for our county, I am now waiting for a visit from the road safety team. In the mean time we found a slither of land to the side of the road was privately owned to which we have erected a access required sign with this land owners permission, which has shown a small improvement but nothing huge.

Johny I think you might be asuming that hellersav anah is a genuine Forum user. They are not they are simply sending reworded posting which conceal a hidden link, which to somewhere not good. this person has been doing this to multiple posts this week. Looking at your original post it is one of those questions, for which there is no simple answer. The best you can hope for is suggestions for further avenues of enquiry.

Johnny - easily done. There haven't been any Moderators meeting the person spec for Moderators on the Forum rules since mid 2018, so there are a few users of the Forums who diligently point IOSH staff standing in for the Moderators to clear breaches of the Forum rules - achrn being one of them. Quite clear to me that they were not having a go at YOU!! Your initial posting was entirely reasonable and I doubt that any of the regular readers who see it otherwise.

No problem. No hard feelings. For avoidance of doubt - no, not remotely directed at you, directed at the mischief-maker using your text from your post to make mischief!
