Hi All

I work in the retail industry with numerous small shops ( over 90) which have  low risk activities. I have completed all the fire risk assessments, rewritten all the H&S  polices and reviewed all the risk assessments.I have also trained most of the shop managers on H&S issues.

This will be my last job before I retire, have not decided when that will be ...but will be in the next 2/3 years  .

The reason for the post is I am struggling to see what else I can do in this role going forward. I have my apprasial coming up soon, to look at the next year regarding H&S,so need to come up with some new  objectives/ideas ?

Any ideas would be appreciated that you have done in your industry when you are at a similar situation as myself.

In the old-school version of PDCA,

You've done the Policy, Orgnaisation, PLanning and implementing.

Perhaps your plan for the next 2-3 years is to embed the process, set habits of reviewing, and do your own review and audit of processes.

Perhaps look at measuring safety culture to see how the changes have landed. this exercise will give you some focus for areas needing more support. Perhaps at this stage, the most valuable thing you can give the workforce is the benefit of your expereince - set up some mentoring sessions and ongoing development for them so (if necessary) they can be more self-sufficient when you have moved on.....

Oh - and future-proof all the records!

Hi confined

Never in my career did I ever think that I had covered everything. It was always about deciding what were the next priorities.

I haven't worked in retail but wonder whether these shops are as "low risk" as you present.

May be visit incognito (if the staff don't easily recognise you!) and just get a feel for what is happening inside and OUTSIDE.

Are the customers verbally or physically aggressive?

What happens when deliveries are made? This might involve looking at things outside opening hours!

Who is responsible for maintenance works and how are these effectively controlled?

Assuming that some of the shops are in older buildings are the asbestos registers up to date?

Who does the asbestos surveys and is the specification OK?

....and lots of other things that happen on the sidelines that are not immediately visible!

Good luck, Peter

I am going on the presumption that your role is multi-hat rather than pure H&S so you could consider:

Retail Sector is currently mulling how it will comply with Energy Performance Certification as we head down the rabbit hole to Net Zero - co-ordinating the landlord/building owners responses should fill a few months.

Then there is Extended Producer Responsibilty for Packaging Waste - the suppliers will be looking for numbers in their twice yearly submissions especially in the devolved nations where consideration will include municipal litter bin disposal.

Mental Health First Aid, Menopause champions - quite a lot of non-core could be taken on.
