Hi, if a shop worker (employee) has an accident at work - slips on a puddle of water, presume if off >7 days its RIDDOR reportable? - thanks.

Is there any reason why you suspect it might not be?

Hi JHF HSE will get virtually NO reports like this as shops would almost invariably have the local authority as the enforcing authority for occupational health and safety legislation. But, yes, there must be 1000s of RIDDOR reports to LAs for accidents similar to that you describe and probably twice as many 1000s of unreported accidents that should be reported. HSE will get 1000s of reports of similar incidents in other sectors. However, RIDDOR is an administrative exercise which enable a picture of how accidents (and other incidents) occur at the most basic level, rather than a pointer to where liability may or may not lie. So, (along with the Labour Force Survey) RIDDOR lets HSE produce statistics. Hence, as example the slightly broader category of "slips, trips and falls on the level" comes out consistently on top as the immediate cause of non-fatal injuries reportable under RIDDOR with manual handling in second place. Some of these slips, trips and falls are relatively easily avoided, e.g. the unnecessary puddle, others less so. Even with appropriate drainage people will occasionally slip on a wet surface in the yard and some of those slips will end up being RIDDOR reportable. www.hse.gov.uk%2Fstatistics%2Ftables%2Fridkind.xlsx&wdOrigin=BROWSELINK">ridkind.xlsx (live.com)

Thanks Peter, as mentioned, I`m not involved in retail (never have been). So its the LA who get the report; as you mentioned slips trips and manual handling must be top of their lists (plus massive under reporting!!). Thanks.
