Morning all,

I have been researching the topic of ‘Gantry Crane training’ via the HSE web site and BS 7121-1:2016 to establish guidance as to whether the use of this type of crane require training by a registered expert or whether it can be delivered in house by a competent train the trainer.

Naturally, there are certain elements of crane use which are high risk so warrant regular inspection both pre use and as part of the lifting regulations, however I would welcome your thoughts as to whether determining competence of operators can be done through an in-house training program or should this be delivered by an external training provider.

Thanks Mike

Hi Mike

In ye olden days when there was lots of heavy engineering factories in the UK each with several overhead gantry cranes, there was probably a training department but most of the training would have been imparted by long in the tooth crane operators to the next generation.

....and assuming the long in the tooth hadn't picked up some bad habits, nothing whatsoever wrong with such approach.

The reason for bringing in somebody from outside is usually either insufficient inhouse resource to do the training inhouse OR to get some formal piece of paper which might keep the ISO auditors happy but doesn't necessarily add much value.

You need to have consideration to the guidance from HSE and in BS7121, but after that your choice as to decide on what is best for YOUR organisation.

I used to work in such a company Peter describes. We used to get experienced people to show them how to use the equipment but would then bring in an external company to assess their competence. This stopped any bad habits creeping in (similar effect to making a copy of a copy of a copy etc). This then gave us the all-important piece of paper for not just ISO auditors, but also HSE when they asked us. It was some time ago so can’t recommend a company, but I think it was a crane company we used for hiring cranes for site work.

Inside we could lift 50T using two gantry cranes in tandem, and outside 100T again in tandem. We also had equipment on the gantry that could rotate the 50T through 180 degrees to turn them over (well we could go completely around if we wanted but why would you) which was a little bit special hence our own employees used to do the majority of the training.

thanks 1 user thanked chris42 for this useful post.
