Good afternoon everyone, I have been asked my opinion on a camera package on offer for our new fleet of vans. It includes cameras in the cab to watch the driver. The claim is that this will reduce "poor behaviour", reduce accidents and protect us and our drivers in the event of a claim or criminal action.
My concern is that they will distract the drivers so they worry about the cameras rather than watching the road. Could anyone please point me in the direction of guidance on this matter? I vaguely remember seeing a bulletin from the police about it but that was years ago!

Do the employees only use the vans for/during work or are they also to/from work and occasional private use? If the former give notice that the camera will be present - they can be a guardian for the employer against poor driver behaviour (phone use etc.) especially where an accident occurs - plenty of recent driver convictions were secured using the in cab footage.
Caution though that as an employer you MUST act in a consistent manner on the images received regardless of circumstance. Are you also considering fitting cameras to the company cars? After all still a company vehicle with a company employee behind the wheel and more likely to be involved in accidents/incidents. If there is private use you need to discuss the system with the drivers as some may have issues with non-work time being invaded by "big brother" and there should be a system to disable recording during private use. Comes down to trust, would you like a camera recording you working at your desk?

If the antics I’ve seen by Incan cameras, drivers quickly forget they are there and some revert back to their norm!!!
There are some procedures that can help introduce and positively adopt them. Like the old days where drivers hated tachographs but progressively liked them where the data was in their favour.
If you’re investing with incab, I assume you’ll also be fitting forward and nearside ones.

Thanks both for your useful responses. We are looking to install front and rear facing cameras as part of the package and our drivers generally think these are a good idea. Drivers do use the vans for some personal use and we haven't thought about putting them in company cars mainly because the insurers haven't suggested it. You have raised some good points which will help inform our policy.

David - it also depends on the type you want to install? I can point you in the right direction if you have safeguarding reasons (cameras that record internally inside the vehicle) and we use a company specifically for this type of install who ensure they meet all data protection laws and GDPR security requirements.

And remember that under GDPR you also have to register with the Information Commissioners Office and pay the annual fee
