We have a ramp structure constructed of steel which is used daily by vehicles to gain access to / from our warehouse which is on a different level. Common sense would suggest that this structure should be inspected periodically by a competent person however, is there a requirement for such or is it just good practice?

Well, the health and safety at work etc act 1974 says you need to do everything that is reasonably practicable to protect employees and none employees, which i think would cover someone using a ramp that sounds like it would be subject to corrosion. Far two often people people want an explicit regulation rather than looking at the spirt of H&S. You could also look at reg 5 workplace (health safety and welfare) regulations. Your not going to find a set statutory period similar to lolar.

HSSnail is correct.  Imagine a situation where, as there is no specific guidance on metal ramps you decide to do nothing. So as we all know materials degrade, through corrosion, wear and metal fatigue etc.  one as someone is driving over the ramp it collapses, and someone is injured. When the HSE inspector turns up you can’t really say; “well there is no specific rules or guidance about this is there?”. The inspector will laugh and remind you of section 2 of the Health and Safety at Work Act, and they might mention section 40 where the employer must demonstrate that they have done everything practicable to comply with their duties,  they will ask how do you actively manage your H&S apply the goal based approach rather than simple compliance with “regulations”.

Hi Pack

One for the structural engineers, but better still already covered in the Health and Safety File and/or Operations & Maintenance Manual for this "structure" within the meaning of the CDM Regulations.

It not currently covered, time it was!

If this was a public highway in the UK, the relevant parts of DMRB and MCHW would be consulted. So, in effect, it is a small bridge and you would do a "Principal Inspection" at least once in every 6 years and intermediate inspections in between - all done on the basis of a risk assessment which would set out how often and what is to be done in the inspections.
