Afternoon all,
At a reccent safety talk on site, our company outlined the requirements for timber kit joiners to use M Class on tool extraction for timber cutting. Cutting involves hardwoods, boards ect for the trades who cut the materials as part of the daily duties.
Would this level of extraction be deemed neccesary in the eyes of HSE in the current climate with the focus on dust?

Lewis, Yes. By definition, M class is designed for higher risk hazardous dusts, like hardwoods. Hardwoods are known carcinogens and therefore significantly higher risk than softwoods.

The latest revision of EH40 (2020) includes comment that mixed (hardwood/softwood) dusts should be treated as hardwood dusts with an LTEL of 3mg/m3
On 17th January 2023 the Carcinogens & Mutagens Directive ammendment 2017/2398/EU reduced this LTEL to 2mg/m3.

Hi Lewis Are you sure these timber kits are hardwood? Quite rare in the UK to use hardwood except in top of the range stuff, where most of the cutting might quite probably be better done in factory conditions.

Roundtuit - well spotted. Could be something to do with the Forums still being aligned to the old iosh.co.uk domain and hence still "Not secure". So, the title might have been trawled by sites with dodgy names like Outdoor Sx in the City. P

MDF has been commonly in use for flatpack units and requires protection from the formaldehyde released by electrical cutting.
