How often should this be services, does anyone know. And what risks are posed as a result of using air conditioning.??

I believe it's annually in terms of servicing. The biggest risk is from Legionella (if not serviced and maintained etc)

The HSE have good information on L8 and are pretty strict when something goes wrong. There have been legal cases, one in particular, where the architect was held responsible for the L8 effect on the public. See http://www.hse.gov.uk/he...services/legionella.htm. The supplier/installer should have given a user/OM manual at commisioning stage and this would give and indication of what the service period(s) was/were. However as with all things it's about risk assessment. Depending on the location of the unit and the atmospherics in the location (dust; other premises etc) it may be that the service period is more frequent. Nothing beats getting in a reputable company to sort this for you. It'll save in the long term

If you are referring to indoor cassettes with out door compressors you should really clean the filters out twice a year - some indoor units located in cloths shops may need to be cleaned out more often due to a build up of fluff on the filters. AC units that use refrigerant gas do not pose a legionella risk as they don't spray out water mist.
If you have a cooling tower that uses water then you open up a completely different kettle of fish - These need to be properly disinfected and certified by a competent contractor as these are the types of unit that have the potential to spread legionella
