Hi,

Could anyone please offer some advice on what thickness of polycarbonate sheeting is required for clear guards on metal milling machines, borers and lathes etc?

It depends on the machine, We make bespoke machine guards where I work, I have seen machine guards that are 5mm thick to 10mm thick. but we do not design, we just make like for like.

If you are designing guards to be fitted then they must comply with the requirements of the Essential Health and Safety Requirements of the Machinery Directive.

This will require them to have adequte strength and impact resistance, and be CE marked so you will need to be able to poduce a technical file for these.

The easiest way is to follow the harmonised standard for guarding ISO 14120, this will give you the information you need to calculate the strength of the guarding required based on the potential impact energies, and how to evaluate this.

There is no one size fits all answer.
