Hi guys,

I'm hoping someone more experienced than me can give me some practical advice because I appear to be going round in circles and I cannot get a straight answer from pH meter suppliers.

I'm intending to install a couple of analogue pH probes in a Zone 2 hazardous area with a (safe area rated) powered controller located 10-15m away in a safe area. As far as I can see, the probes are non-powered and only send millivolt signals and therefore these should count as simple apparatus so I should be able to install any analogue probe without issue, but I cannot get a straight answer regarding what barriers need to be used, if any, nor what impact on probe accuracy I'm likely to see if I installed such a barrier between the probe and controller (or indeed if I installed a junction box between the two).

It may be that I am going to need a hazardous area rated controller, but I'm reluctant to go to that expense if it's not required.

Any advice you can offer would be much appreciated.

Sharon

DSEAR Schedule 3 and Regulation 7 covers this sort of scenario. You should used suitably ATEX rated equipment unless risk assessment says otherwise.........

You should do a specific ignition risk assessment of the equipment. BS60079-0 and BS80079-0 give guidance on how to do these.

It sounds though you might have a similar situation to hearing aid and electronic watches which are generally permitted in Zone 2 areas as their energy sources are sufficiently low and they have no sources of self ignition.

The data sheet for the pH meter should help with getting the information.
