Hi All im currently working as a H&S Manager at present for a company that works in the construction/Rail industries across the UK. i have been offered quite a bit freelance work from a couple of various companies but my current employment doesnt allow me to work for anyone outside my employer. It seems easier obtaining rail HSQE work from the feedback/research. So iv decided to start on my own as of next year, has anyone got any advice/recommendations etc. i know i need to increase my client base (and rapid).
cheers

One thing to keep in mind is that when you are employed probably almost all the administrative work involved in running a business is done by the employer. Once you are on your own it will fall to you. So you will probably need some training or support, at least in the early stages, so that you do not fall foul of the administrative requirements (tax [HMRC], insurance, accounting, chasing payment, etc.) I am lucky as my wife is trained in this and takes care of the administration leaving me free to do the consultancy work.

If you are going Ltd then you MUST find a good accountant. They can make or break you financially. Speak to several accountants and see if they work with big or small companys. Some might only want to work with companys over a set turnover threshold. Luckily mine will deal with any size company and they are literaly worth their weight in gold. Their office is below my wifes office so she can pop in and ask questions, collect paperwork etc.

Be aware that [unless things have changed in the last few years] getting professional insurance for H&S work that involves railways can be very very expensive. It often gets even worse if you need to go trackside as part of the job
