Dismantling and reinstating garden shed CDM? - Can you advise me on CDM regulations...

We have a job which has come from a client (facilities management company) to dismantel and remove a small garden shed and fences at a private address (home) and reinstate new. Can you advise me if you consider this work to come under CDM under dismantling of structures?

I do not think that task would come under CDM,  unless you meet following;

  • The construction is scheduled to last longer than 30 working days, and it will have more than 20 workers working at the same time at any point in the building project.
  • Or, if the construction work has more than 500 person days.

its a 3 day job for 2 men :-) shed is 2.4 1.9m domestic garden shed.

CDM 2015 applies to any structure which includes wooden and prefabricated structures. So CDM does apply in that the principles of prevention should be followed, and the various duty holders as described do need to be identified. George's reply is about the criteria for notification: your project is not notifiable under CDM.

CDM does apply,

I think George is refering to the requirements to notify HSE, the rest of CDM applies for any construction work, but according to an HSE building inspector that spoke at an event i attended a few years ago - a simply job like this would probably be cobered by simple RAMS - CDM should not create mountains of paperwork in every case.

My Mistake, CDM is not something I have dealt with.

CITB have a CDM Wizard App which is quite useful if scoping small works, free to download from the Apple and Google App stores. It can produce printable CDM plans in pdf format.

Any task that is construction related is classed as CDM, however as previously stated a simple set of RAMS should suffice

CDM does apply (it applies to all construction) as others have noted.

The requirements of CDM are partly a function of the size of project.  As others have noted, the duration (etc) affect whether it is notifiable, but also, if you will only have one contractor on site (your own operatives) then you won't need to appoint PC and PD either.  However, note that 'one contractor' is interpreted strictly - if your operatives are on site and you bring a fencing subbie to site, then you have more than one contractor and the PC and PD appointments need to be made.

...but whether or not you have more than one contractor, you can still keep it very simple.

If what you do for anything broadly similar that isn't construction work, to manage the risks is done appropriately, then you could do the same.

What are the risks, who could be affected, how will you protect the?.
