Hi,

A firend has asked me to find out what qualifications and experience he would need to be able to work offshore on oil/gas rigs in the health and safety team.

Does anyone have any experience in this industry?

I have said he should start working towards his NEBOSH GC then some sort of level 6 diploma but is there anything specific he should be doing to get a job like this?

Cheers,

OP

The main other course would be BOSIET (basic offshore induction and emergency training). not a cheap course but an essential requirement.

Different companies will want other courses dependant on where on the world exactly they are offshore.

thanks 1 user thanked Danbannister81 for this useful post.

The pay isn't that great working offshore, at the moment - if that is why your friend is asking, in the UK O&G industry. Aberdeen is still pretty quiet.

Hi Ian,

He is coming out of the Navy and wants to retrain in something to do with health and safety I said to him he might be better off possibly doing the national construction cert and going into that area.

Cheers

In addition to the BOSIET, your friend will also need to do a MIST (Minimum Industry Standards Training) course. Although not an absolute requirement, most operators insist on personnel having this before they are allowed offshore.

Qualifications themselves do not guarantee jobs offshore.  I have worked in the industry for over 20 years and experience is what companies mostly look for first over qualifications.

To get into the industry though it might be better to try and get an onshore job first. Having a forces background will certainly help and that way he can get involved in H&S. Many offshore Safety Officers/STC's have operational backgrounds before moving into H&S.

I also agree with Ian Bell that the pay isn't what it used to be, but is still better than what you will get for an equivilant onshore position.

It is is difficult but not impossible. Good luck to him!!!
