I've decided to start monthly safety campaigns at the sites I am responsible for.

In the past when I have done this I pick a topic such as "SLIPS / TRIPS / FALLs" and start raising awareness by the following

  • Site email telling people the Monthly Topic.
  • Have a section about the topic as an agenda item for the Safety Reps and SMT meetings
  • Raise it at the daily accountability meetings 
  • Ask departments to focus on STF's for Hazard reporting
  • Put posters and literature up at the EHS boards
  • Online training suite emailed out to staff watch a video and answer some short questions (30mins max) on the said topic

These are pretty stand things which I'm sure many people will use , but I'm trying to think of new ways to get the messages through if anyone has any tips or advice on launching monthly safety topics / campaigns I'd be grateful

I have in the past used pay slips to start initiatives off which guaranteed that at the very least the messages were read!

You can try some basic advertising/marketing methods (Google is your friend).

As most of the methods you have mentioned are fairly tried and tested it is worth trying to come up with something a bit different to get that enhanced engagement.

Some things I've been involved in include

- 'Nudge Theory' notices and stickers etc at 'opportunities to see' locations such as point of use or other areas that dont take specific effort ie. above sinks, toilets, mess tables etc

- Rescue dummies dressed in company overalls arranged to simulate a fallen collegue at possible slip/trip/fall points

- Bistro Boards with campaign messages/information that can be regularly moved to create the impression that the site is flooded with this information for maximum exposure

- Dedicated point of use poster campaigns using regularly changing images and/or messages to catch the attention either consciously or sub-consciously.
