Hello all, Looking for a bit of guidance. A lady at work, whao has an arthritis condition, recently attended a training course. One of the excersises involved pairs of people standing face to face and with their hands together, pushing against each other. It is suspected that this action caused her arthritis to flare up. Consequently, she is currently off work. Does this require a RIDDOR, as the arthritis is an existing condition, albeit the process of pushing caused it to flare. Thanks in advance, Mitch.

Too many variables with arthritis to place the blame firmly upon this exercise - change in the weather for example.

I assume this flare up will lead to the IP being off normal work for greater than 7 days (if not then instantly it is not reportable). Secondly I assume the training course was in house. Even given both of these I would probably say this was not reportable. It is a pre existing condition, not the result of an accident.
In saying that, I feel people get to hung up on whether to report or not. The HSE is not going to come knocking at your door for a person being off work with an arthirits flare up. If in doubt, report and let the HSE deal with it. Maybe if we all started over-reporting they would clarify the rules for us.

Perhaps more importantly, what was the accident? Injuries are accidental but are not, in themselves, the accident.
