I have my first interview for Safety Advisor. After reading up about the various hazards of the industry, I am finding there is a lot of technical knowledge required eg Pressure systems, Wel monitoring. If I were to secure the position I would maybe have to advise bringing in external specialists to monitor and carry out thorough inspections. Would a Safety Officer/ Advisor be expected to have a greater knowledge of the more technical issues? and is it acceptable to bring in external bodies?

Good luck with the interview. The most successful safety practitioners have been those who can recognise their own limitations and are not afraid of seeking qualified and suitable advice. There are specialists available in all fields - a part of the trick is developing relationships and identifying suitable sources. Your business Insurance Company is a reasonable start to ask for providers, or on here. 'Most' successful specialists won't be available immediately and will need time to plan work in, be a little wary of people immediately available.

I am employed as a H&S advisor for a manufacturing company. I do not have the required skills to carry out many of the inspections, but I do have the skills to know what inspections are needed, and who can carry them out. I feel that is what I am employed for. I doubt many people have a broad enough knowledge to carry out the wide rande of inspections required within a standard industry, up to a standard that would be accepted as competent. In most cases our insurance company is the first port of call. They have subcontracted a lot of it out to another company that send the correct engineer for the job. I keep an eye on the reports, and ensure the inspections are always covering the plant/processes/hazards required, adjusting the list as plant is retired and new plant is installed. I am confident that you will be expected to bring in external professionals as required, unless the pay grade for the role is astronomical ;)

Same as CptBeaky, except that as I manage multiple sites each site organises the list and gets the reports. I review that they action anything that requires action every now and then, also that at any one time we know the status of each bit of kit and its state of repair. I try and give people tools and info to do things themselves, I then become point of advice for anything odd and to an extent policeman. Ie why did the LOLER engineer pick up this issue on the Fork truck when you are supposed to be checking it every day “before use”, type policing. The big bit was getting them to actually read (and understand) the reports they had been getting for years before I started! So you need to know what a LOLER / PUWER report looks like and what it means ie type “a” and “b” issues etc. Assuming that you are not going to start work in a brand-new business, you should find everything in place, and that you will just take over the rains. Every new job has a steep learning curve, even if it is just the lingo. Chris

Thanks to all those who replied. You have given me more confidence going into the interview. I have been doing that much research in the last few days, I have just overwhelmed myself with information.
