HSE Guidance HSG 53 "Respiratory Protection at Work" states that continuous wear time for a respirator mask eg respirator mask FFP 3 mask is less than 1 hour.
Are there any healthcare Trusts within the UK that have put in place measures to extend this time period eg 2,3,4 hrs etc for continuous use in light of the excessive demand for use of the masks during this Coronavirus pandemic.
Any guidance/ information would be appreciated.

Most news reports show nursing staff commenting at having to deal with patients within a forty minute window. That would indicate they are using the PPE in line with its design and manufacturer instruction. If you aren't following the manufacturer instruction you are not providing the required protection. How do you propose to extend the working time in a mask saturated with the wearers breath & sweat?

It depends on how you define 'continous wear time'. Is taking off the FFP3 mask for a couple of minutes, 5 minutes, or 10 minutes considered breaking the 1 hour timescale? Are you then replacing the mask or continuing to use it?

One of the reasons for that 1 hour window is the strain it puts on a user's lungs. It is harder to breathe through a filter...
