Hi,

In the current COVID-19 situation and the good weather we are having.

It will probably become hotter going into the summer months.

Is there any guidance with the use of  ventilation, portable air condtioning units and fans in the workplace.

Thanks

Thats rather pessimistic - thinking the weather will only 'probably' get warmer in the summer. Even in the UK summer months are the summer is warmer than the winter.

As regards air conditioning and ventilation - surely by now people know that if they have symptoms they won't be in work - so why restrict the use of air conditioning/open windows etc

Advice as to? MHSWR already discusses temperature and air flow or are you wondering if there are things you should not be doing such as propping open fire doors?

For example in facilities that have no fresh air (windows) and require extra portable air conditioning units or fans.

Will if someone turns up at work and they have the virus and share a room with someone else it is likely that they will pass it on. It does not really matter if they have a fan or something else blowing the particles about, it will spread.

Water cooled air conditioning still has that old favourite - Legionella.

Your pre-planned maintenance worker will probably have that in hand as one of the weekly checks after the fire alarms and water pipes and the daily spraying of all door plates with a disinfectant.

Do these facilities, unmodified since original construction, pre-date the Building Regulations?

If they were built or modified afterwards Approved Document F covers indoor air quality

I would also like to know opinions on this and whether people are allowing fans at desks, convector type systems etc. We don't all work in modern buildings with air con and limted opening of windows.

is that it is so low risk that we can allow it or do say no and keep fire doors open etc for free fresh air flow.

I have asked our local PH for more guidance as this will cause us issues

....we have included in our assessment that anyone that is at a desk long enough to need a fan to keep cool should be working from home so no fans...those that need to be there should have the appropriate social distance or greater if moderate risk is assessed...
