Hello,

Government advice is to dispose single use face covering in with usual waste, is this enough????

Does the same guidance apply for work places as I cannot find anything on disposal on the HSE website.

Paul.

Unless you are in a medical setting with actual Covid patients yes.

Face coverings are NOT medical equipment necessitating specialist (expensive) bio-waste disposal

A used face covering is no more of a risk than a tissue that you have coughed, sneezed or blown your nose on.  The public health guidance on used tissues has remained "put it in the bin". To me, it's the same.

They must not go into recycling. There is no need to treat these or any cleaning items differently unless you know you have Covid 19 then all materials should be double bagged and left for 72 hours before placing in the general waste stream. Only clinical settings have different requirements.

NHS:

"Disposable face mask or face covering: Dispose of in dedicated bin in hospital. If disposing at home, dispose into normal household waste, tie up bag and keep separately for 72 hours and then put out into land fill bin"

HM gov (as at 13th July)

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-covid-19-disposing-of-waste#face-coverings-and-personal-protective-equipment-ppe-for-social-distancing

If you need to throw away used face coverings or PPE, such as gloves:

dispose of them in your ‘black bag’ waste bin at home or at work, or a litter bin if you’re outside do not put them in a recycling bin as they cannot be recycled through conventional recycling facilities take them home with you if there is no litter bin - do not drop them as litter

You do not need to:

put them in an extra bag store them for a time before throwing them away
