Hi all

Being a bit of a luddite with some modern technology, especially around all forms of social media, looking for a bit of info regarding IOSH webinars.

There is a webinar that I think I would like to view tomorrow, but I have never taken part in any webinars.

Will I need any particular software on my PC to take part ? we are not allowed to down load new programs on our computers, so could take me a while to get permission if needed.

I think you register and get some form of login details, but log into what. Once registered will there be full instructions of what to do?

Thanks for any help.

Chris

If it’s a webinar the software to run should be on the world wide web and you should be able to log etc just as you can access the IOSH forum.   But that said it depends on what platform they decide to use and whether there is enough bandwidth to support it.

Nothing wrong with being Luddite; people should realise that ALL IT is ultimately a crushing disappointment and NEVER works like you might hope it might, which is why they can keep selling you updates!

If it is a webinar, it will basically be the same as watching a live feed, but with a chat box next to it. You shouldn't need to worry about a camera or microphone, just speakers/headphones and a screen.

Is it the one about new ladder standards, or is that a HSE one?

Thanks both – good to know I do not need special software.

No, the one I’m thinking about is “the World Health Organisation & IOSH webinar: Dealing with communicable diseases in a world of uncertainty”. Big pink banner when you open the IOSH main page at the top.

The Ladder changes is the HSE / Ladder Association - no more class 1 and 3 and a beefed-up BS EN 131. We tend to Buy BSEN131 anyway as class 1 was heavier. However only BSEN131 will be available for commercial use so, easy choice.

Cheers

Chris

Chris - you probably DO need a programme to log in e.g. on Zoom, but you are very unlikely to be the only person in the organisation to have downloaded it. Much more likely that you would be one of the last.

If you have a "friend" in IT I would just ask them what they think.

I was a bit of a Luddite at work, but my "friend"  in IT used to solve anything. Just needed to be polite with them!

At home when I want to log in to eg. Zoom, Microsoft has often just done an update and I find it necessary to download the Zoom software again, but each time Norton 360 checks it over and gives it a tick.

Unfortunately, our IT people are external to the company, and I think they are @$$3%&* useless. New Pc in Feb with a built in web cam – posh or what ( only 10 years behind everyone else). After losing large chunks of my work spanning back over two years, they still can’t reliably give me access to our main server to work at home or from satellite offices. The rest of the nation seemed to manage such a task. So not really an option.

The IOSH web page seems to draw a distinction between webinars and Zoom meetings. This is a webinar, so from what the others have said I do not need extra software. Unfortunately, I have been waiting all day for a phone call to arrange a physical meeting, which could be tomorrow. So have hesitated to sign up.

Either way near to the time I will register if I can and see how far I get.

Thanks

Chris

In general, many webinars will run through a browser.  Some do require software and offer it to you, although that's no good if your security settings don't allow it.

Unfortunately IOSH tends to use Zoom for webinars which does need to be downloaded.  Other webinar platforms are available ...

How about attending it on your own personal computer which doesn't have these restrictions?

Oh and your other question - once registered you get an email with a link, and an option to add it to your electronic calendar (Outlook or the like).  Clicking the link starts the process of accessing the webinar ...

Thanks Kate, yes you and Peter were correct I needed Zoom, which back before Christmas was taken off everyone’s computer. However sadly I did not read your post until afterwards. However, when I clicked the link, it auto downloaded zoom onto my computer without asking. It then asked me to install, and I thought what the heck by this point, so not sure how much trouble I’m in again!

Not sure about the usefulness of the webinar, they seemed to avoid the interesting questions. Will reflect as they say on it. Part of me does feel like I handed over contact details for something that was not worth it. Not sure there was anything in there that I didn’t know or would have concluded for myself. Its going to carry on apparently. So other than a newfound desire to stay away from Camels and snails, onward we go.

Apparently, it can count towards CPD, so I’m going to find something I can say I learned from it, just going to have to be creative.

Well your IT department are indeed totally [expletive deleted]ing hopeless if they tell you not to install software but don't do anything to actually stop you doing it!

It is a nifty trick by Zoom as it side steps administrator installation rights by delivering its .exe file over the web

Nice thing is you can also uninstall it once used without having to admit to IT that you had it on your machine.

....and Chris, how ever little CPD you might have gained from attending the webinar, you have got some CPD by finding ways to see a webinar. If you now find the way to delete evidence that you have been Zooming that's a bit more CPD.

Anything you learn that helps you be more effective at your job is CPD. Sometimes learning how to be more effective can include finding ways of getting round ill thought out corporate rules.
