Might soon be involved in the re-fit of some laboratory areas, does anyone know of any good quality, freely available anthropometric tables defining reach zones and working heights for various percentile of the UK adult population. I had something like this once, but that was in a previous role and I can't find it know. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks P.

Hi Pseudonym - covered in some ISO, EN or British standards but you won't be likely to get them for free unless you subscribe to a service that offers these. Otherwise, you could look to see if you could find some ergonomics textbooks that include such tables - would need to check that the textbook is aimed at a similar audience to your workforce...... .....in the distant past, BS5304 set out standards for openings in machine guards, but I understand that these were based on anthropometric data for white males. As the UK workforce diversified it was found that the data simply didn't enable adequate protection, so that e.g. Asian women's fingers were so slender that they could accidentally reach through tunnel guards. ....so the data was updated to reflect the population at risk and BS5304 was updated in 1975 before being replaced by an EN standard. When I left HSE, BS5304 was one of just four documents that Inspectors got on personal issue that HSE demanded back from me. Not sure why as my copy had been so well used that it was falling apart.

5304 is still available as PD5304, I think 2019is the current version. If you want info on anthropometric measurements - try books by Stephen Pheasant. He wrote quite a number of books on human factors etc

There is a lot of interesting stuff about ergonomics in labs on the HSE website, but it is disguised as “Ergonomics in The Pharmaceutical Sector” https://www.hse.gov.uk/pharmaceuticals/index.htm

I have made up a design guide over the years for engineers...based on all the anthro guides... A Horizontal Reach – Precision Tasks - 27.9 cm Maximum
B Horizontal Reach – High frequency (> 2/min) or High Force tasks (> 4.5 kg) - 40.6 cm Maximum
C Horizontal Reach – Large Product Assembly Tasks - 55.9 cm Maximum
D Vertical Reach – High Frequency (> 2/min) or High Force Tasks (> 4.5 kg) - 158 cm Maximum
E Vertical Reach - Infrequent or Low Force Tasks - 188 cm Maximum
