Hello all, hope all well!

I'm looking for some guidance or suggestions for people / vehicle segregation within a warehouse, specifically the booking pallets in and pallets out process. Currently, the pallets are unloaded from containers and positioned in lines infront of the bay by forklift / PPT, and a person books the pallets in by walking along the lines and scanning them into stock.

Often a pallet may need to moved by forlift close by where the workers on foot are working and i'm nervous of the worker on foot stepping out from a pallet into the line of a FLT. 

We're using some temporary barriers to block off the pallets but it is a bit of a pain lifting and carrying them constantantly from bay to bay - this process happens several times a day in different bays - it's a busy warehouse with 28 bays.

Could anyone suggest anything else we could try please?

Guidance from WISH (Waste Industry Safety and Health forum) available on the HSE website gives some guidance on what minimum segregation distances are considered appropriate in places such as waste transfer stations.

Why are the pallets not scanned as they are lifted from the container or deposited in the warehouse by the FLT driver? It sounds as though you have an automated system but forgot to remove the secondary human.

At worst you will have the FLT driver on and off the truck, at best you will find somewhere to attach the scanner to eliminate the on/off, it will eliminate the presence of a pedestrian.

Am assuming an automatic scanning system is out of question? If a business case can be made (eg saving of one employee) it might be worth looking into.

As regards other options, effectively the  use of this "marshalling area" with temporay barriers will always have some risk and if it has been made difficult to do things safely then expect issues. Sometimes old fashioned work study techniques coul be effective to see what ideas can be considered- the worse option is you have the accident and then HAVE to put someting in place- best to have the gain without the pain!
