Hi, does anyone here have experience of construction regulations/legislation in Africa? Is there the equivalent of CDM (UK) or the Construction Regulations (IRL)? Conscious that there may be variances, is there a higher accepted standard? Thanks in advance.

Hi Dalton It's going to vary according to which part of Africa and how much colonial influence has been adopted since independence. So, as example those countries formerly in the British Empire probably have legislation that draws on that in the UK but possibly reflecting that in the UK some years ago. As example, the principle of goal-setting legislation that follows the principle of "reasonable practicability" is common in former parts of the Empire. In practice, projects for major clients may be influenced by UK, EU and/or US requirements. Hence you might find projects which apply the principles of the EC Temporary or Mobile Construction Sites as "transposed" in the UK by CDM and CDM(NI) or in the Republic by very similar requirements in the regulations you refer to. Others may be influenced by OSHA regulations being adopted by project clients such as multinationals. So, you need to consider the local legislation in each country + what the specific client wants.

I've worked in several African countries for many years
(Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Chad, Sudan, South Sudan, Kenya, Angola, Egypt)
I would say that unless you're working for an international company, on one of their sites, where they have chosen to adopt the H & S standards and requirements of the home country, (OSHA, H&S Exe) etc, you will be hard pressed to find any enforceable legislation
Until something goes wrong, and then you will be amazed at how many local inspectors arrive with your name on the warrant for arrest....
