I am looking to engage with a product safety consultant for some temporary support in this area. We sell a range of goods that we need to ensure are compliant with relevant legislation.

Does anyone know of a good consultancy or can point me in the direction of one.

Thank you in advance

Can I ask please, in general terms; what is the product you are looking at?

Paul asks a very pertinent question because depending on the product type there will be different regulatory requirements - Food, Drugs, Medical Devices, Construction, Toys etc. - each have their own specialists

Then you also have to consider which market - GB (England, Scotland, Wales), Norther Ireland, EU or RoW - again different rules depending upon where you are trading e.g. UK REACH, EU REACH, Turkish REACH, US HazCom

You might want to take a quick look at a few resources

https://www.businesscompanion.info/

https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/office-for-product-safety-and-standards

The types of products you mention feature regularly in the market surveillance reports of Europe

https://ec.europa.eu/safety-gate-alerts/screen/webReport/detail/10000082

The OPSS now issues the UK reports

Often with Jewellery it is the presence of heavy metals such as Cadmium or irritant/allergens such as nickel

Certain leather products are commonly flagged for their excess Chromium content

Childrens clothing are normally for strangulation hazards with draw cords or loose ties or choking hazard from easily removable small items

Test laboratories such as Intertek may provide some guidance or you could look to the Chartered Trading Standards Institute https://www.tradingstandards.uk/

Thank you Roundtuit.

We really need a consultant to support us while we recruit to a vacancy in this area and support the new person during induction.
