Is it a requirement for a pemdant operated overhead crane to have audible / visual waring alarms ?. HSE refer to a guidance leaflet PM55 but i cannot find this or a reference to this anywhere.

Wizzer - PM 55 Safe working with travelling overhead cranes published in 1985 and reprinted in 1990. If you have a subscription to some document libraries you might find it. Whether the guidance is still current might be doubtful, though whilst the legislation has changed the overall principles are much the same.

I think there is something in BS 7121 regarding giving a warning to personnel before moving along tracks. It was a long time ago since I last read this. I remember having a problem with neighbours the other side of a river, in the early / late hours. We could not remove the alarm ( and didn’t want to) but we did change them for directional sounders. This was a few decades ago, but I’m sure there is something in there. Of course the next question is about having to do what a BS states. Chris

Are you looking at gantry cranes in a workshop? What are you looking to gain by having an audio/visual alarm on a manually operated gantry crane?

I can tell an anecdote about gantry cranes in a workshop. The workshop was partitioned into two adjacent areas, neither visible from the other, each of which had its own overhead crane. The cranes were operated by hand-held remote controls.
You may think this was an accident waiting to happen, but fortunately it was a near miss that happened. The crane operator using the remote control was puzzled that nothing was happening to the crane overhead. It turned out they were using the remote control for the other crane.
