Hi there,

I have an assessment to complete - I have to write a business case about implmentation of a safety and health management system. I am in the catering sector so will have to based around that. Can anyone help or advise where to start? I don't have anyone on site to ask and feeling a little lost, This is an apprentice level assessment and its a pass or fail paper.

Thank you for reading.

Try looking at these examples on HSE site

Hi Catrina,

Do you know what the stucture of your paper looks like yet?

Plenty of internet pages devoted to writing business cases.

You could also try the Federation of Small Businesses.

Managing for health and safety (hse.gov.uk) should also provide some pointers for you.

Without wanting to do the assignment for you I would approach it from a basic point a view, then expand it from there.

Why should a (catering) company implement health and safety practices? (moral, financial and legal)

How would a mangement system help achieve this?

What are the advantages of a mangement system as opposed to an ad-hoc approach?

I think that should be a good starter, although there are others here that have far greater knowledge than myself.

thanks 1 user thanked CptBeaky for this useful post.

The Captain's suggested approach looks sound.

As well as describing the benefits you may need to argue that they outweigh the apparent disadvantages (such as devoting resources to implementing a management system).

Also, "recommend appropriate safety and health management system" suggests that you need to pick out a particular management system and recommend that, saying why it is appropriate.  Examples are ISO 45001 and HSG65.  Bear in mind that you can implement a management system such as ISO 45001 without becoming certified to it and thus avoiding the financial costs associated with external auditing (although in the case of ISO 45001 you still have the outlay of £xxx to buy the standard, whereas HSG65 is freely available).

Yes, keep it simple. Plan it out and keep to the word count(I assume that there will be a limit)

Use the format:

  • Introduction-explain what you will be saying
  •  Main body include all of arguments for and against like Kate said. Reference HSG 65 ‘Managing for Health and Safety’ (because it is free to download and easy to understand)
  • Summarise what you decided and explain why H&S is good thing and in the long run saves the organisation  money.
