Hi all

Do garage vehicle lifts where staff work underneah have have to be inspected every six monhs or once a year. I have always thought it was once a year but I have read recently that if staff work undeneath them it is every 6 months.

By law every 12 months as people are not in the cars being lifted, however, it is clearly stated in that HSE guidance that 1 you need to do a risk assessment, 2 - there is a BS 7980:2003 code that states examinations to be done every 6 months, and 3 - it is industry best practice.

It would be hard for you to defend and show that you reduced the risk ALARP and that you have done everything that a reasonable person would do.
